Lumbago—Is Yours Caused by Degenerative Disc Disease?
Lumbago, a term used to describe general lower back pain, has many causes. The lower back, or lumbar region, is responsible for supporting the weight of the upper body as well as facilitating much of the twisting, turning and lifting that the body doesleading to wear and tear and sometimes injury.
One extremely common cause of lumbago is degenerative disc disease. As it is often a product of aging, this condition is most often experienced by people in middle age or older. Essentially, as we grow older the composition of the soft, spongy discs separating our vertebrae changes, becoming thinner, less flexible and more fragile, offering less protection to the vertebrae they separate. The discs may even begin to break down. As this happens, vertebrae begin rubbing against each other, causing irritation, swelling, and ultimately, lumbago. It’s not uncommon for the problem to be exacerbated by another lumbar condition like osteoarthritis.
Fortunately, there are a variety of methods available for managing lumbago associated with degenerative disc disease. Your doctor will likely start your treatment plan with conservative approaches, including bed rest, over-the-counter anti-inflammatory and pain medications, and physical therapy. If those do not work there are a number of surgical procedures that may be able to reduce the lumbago symptoms. At Laser Spine Institute (LSI) we offer several, and we perform them using endoscopic techniques making them minimally invasive.
